Towing & Hitches
Hitches, tow bars, ball mounts, weight-distribution and sway control, and trailer wiring — over 1,000 parts, most of them universal-fit rather than vehicle-specific, from Weigh Safe, B&W, Blue Ox and more.
Everything behind the hitch: tow bars, weight-distribution and sway control, bike and cargo carriers, trailer wiring, jacks, straps and locks — Weigh Safe, Method Race Wheels, B&W and more.
Two numbers govern everything here and neither is the one on the trailer. The first is your vehicle's tow rating; the second is tongue weight, which should sit near ten to fifteen percent of what you are pulling. Too little tongue weight is what starts a trailer swaying at highway speed, and no amount of hitch will fix a badly loaded trailer.
Weight-distribution gear moves some of that tongue load back onto the front axle, which restores steering feel and headlight aim on a heavy tow. Sway control is a separate device solving a separate problem, and on a long or tall trailer you generally want both.
A tow setup is a chain and it is only as good as its weakest link. The vehicle end is a trailer hitch and ball mount or hitch ball rated for your actual tongue weight; heavy and fifth-wheel loads move to gooseneck and 5th wheel. Legal and safe towing needs wiring and lighting and, over most trailer weights, a brake controller. Then hitch locks and security and the towing accessories that keep it workable.
