A factory tailgate hinge and mount is designed for the factory spare, and hanging a heavier, larger tire on it stresses the hinge, cracks the tailgate skin and eventually sags the door. A dedicated carrier moves that load onto reinforced hinges or onto a bumper-mounted swing-out.

Check three things before buying: the tire diameter and width the carrier accepts, the bolt pattern of the wheel it will carry, and whether the swing-out clears your rear door or camera. A carrier that blocks the tailgate or the reversing camera is a daily irritation rather than an occasional one.
