Trailer wiring is the most common towing fault and the easiest to prevent. Corrosion at the connector is where it starts, because the plug lives outside, low, and in the salt spray thrown off the rear tires. Dielectric grease and a cover on the socket prevent most of it.

Match the connector to the trailer's functions, not to what fits. A 4-pin carries lights only; a 7-pin adds electric brakes, reverse and a charge line. Converters are needed where a vehicle runs separate turn and brake circuits and the trailer combines them — wiring them directly rather than through a converter backfeeds the circuits and blows fuses.
