The ball mount is where most towing mistakes are made, because it is where three ratings have to agree. The mount, the ball and the receiver each carry their own gross trailer weight and tongue weight ratings, and the assembly is only as strong as the lowest of them. Check all three rather than assuming the heaviest part governs.

Get the height right at the same time. A trailer should sit close to level under load — nose-high lightens the tow ball and starts sway, nose-low overloads the tongue and the rear axle. Measure the coupler height with the trailer loaded, then choose the drop or rise that levels it, which is exactly what an adjustable mount is for.
