Proportional and time-delay controllers work differently and it is worth knowing which you are buying. A proportional controller senses the tow vehicle's own deceleration and applies the trailer brakes to match, so the trailer slows with you and stops pushing at the hitch. A time-delay unit ramps to a preset level regardless of how hard you are braking — cheaper, and noticeably less smooth.

Most provinces require trailer brakes above a weight threshold, and a breakaway system that applies the trailer brakes if it separates from the vehicle. Check your vehicle for a factory tow harness before wiring one in — many trucks have a dedicated plug behind the dash that removes most of the installation.
