A shift light does what a tachometer cannot: it tells you to shift without asking you to look away from the road or the track. Set the threshold at the rpm where the engine actually stops making power rather than at the redline, since peak power usually arrives before the limiter.

The same devices work as warning lights for a threshold you must not miss — a temperature or pressure limit that would otherwise need you to be watching the right dial at the right moment. Mount where peripheral vision catches it, and wire it on a switched, fused feed like any other accessory.
