Carrying fuel and water safely is mostly about the mount, not the container. A full 20-litre pack weighs over 15 kilograms, and an unsecured one becomes a projectile in a hard stop. Purpose-built mounts anchor to a rack, bed or tire carrier and are rated for that mass; a ratchet strap is not.

Keep fuel and water containers distinct and never interchange them, and check what your province allows — there are limits on carrying fuel inside an enclosed cabin, and vented containers behave differently from sealed ones at altitude and in heat. Long-range replacement tanks are the alternative where the load is regular rather than occasional.
