A fog lamp is defined by where it puts light, not how much. The beam is wide and sharply cut off at the top, and the lamp sits low, so the light travels under the fog, snow or dust rather than into it. Aim a bright lamp up into falling snow and it reflects straight back — the reason a spot lamp makes a whiteout worse.

Selective yellow and amber lenses reduce that back-scatter further and are worth having on a vehicle that drives Canadian winters. Fit fog lamps low and level, wire them so they can be switched independently of the main beams, and check your province's rules on how many auxiliary lamps may be lit on a public road.
