A muffler sets tone; a resonator removes a specific frequency. Chambered mufflers give the traditional deep note with modest restriction. Straight-through designs, where the exhaust passes a perforated core packed in fibre, flow best and are loudest. Turbo-style bodies sit between the two and are the usual choice when a truck is driven daily.

Drone is the complaint that follows most exhaust work, and it is a resonance at cruising rpm rather than a matter of overall volume. A resonator sized for that frequency is the cure, which is why many systems run one alongside the muffler rather than instead of it. Check inlet and outlet diameter and whether the necks are offset or centred before ordering.
