A nerf bar sits tighter to the body than a running board, which is what you want on a lifted truck or anything that sees a trail: less to catch on a rock or a snowbank, and a smaller target for the shin on the way in. The trade is a smaller stepping surface, which matters more with passengers, in winter boots, or on a crew cab where a rear passenger is stepping too.

Check cab length and mounting before ordering. Cab-length bars stop at the cab; wheel-to-wheel run the length of the bed and double as a step to the box. Most bars bolt to existing body-mount holes, but a lift changes the geometry between the rocker and the ground — measure it rather than assuming.
