Three readings cover most of the risk on a modified or working vehicle. Coolant temperature warns first on a long climb or a heavy tow. Transmission temperature is the one that quietly destroys automatics and that factory dashboards very often omit entirely. Oil pressure reports bearing condition long before a noise does.

Electric and mechanical are a real choice rather than a price tier. A mechanical gauge routes the measured fluid to the back of the dial and works with no electrical dependency; an electric gauge reads a sender and is easier to route and safer for fuel. Match the range to your engine — a needle that never leaves the first third of its sweep is a needle you stop reading.
