A gauge is only as honest as its sender, and this is where most gauge purchases go wrong. An electric gauge needs the sender matched to it; a mechanical gauge runs a line of the measured fluid to the back of the dial and reads with no electrical dependency at all. Neither is better in general — mechanical is preferred for oil pressure by many engine builders, while electric is easier to route and safer for fuel.

Choose the range for the engine you have, not the one on the box. A boost gauge reading to 60 psi wastes most of its sweep on a truck that makes 20, and a needle that barely moves is a needle you stop watching.
