Match the rating to the trailer and the drop to the vehicle. Every hitch carries two numbers — gross trailer weight and tongue weight — and the lowest-rated part in the chain governs the whole assembly, whether that is the ball, the mount, the receiver or the vehicle itself. A Class V mount on a Class III receiver is still Class III.

Height matters more than people expect. A trailer should tow close to level: nose-high shifts weight off the tow ball and invites sway, nose-low overloads the tongue and the rear axle. Measure the coupler height loaded, then choose the drop or rise that puts it level, which is what adjustable ball mounts are for.
