Coverage is a legal requirement before it is a styling choice. Provincial regulations generally require the tread to be covered by the body or a flare, so a wider wheel and tire package that pushes rubber past the arch usually needs a flare to stay road legal — and it is also what stops your own truck from stone-chipping its doors and blasting the vehicle behind you.

Styles differ mainly in how far they project and how they mount. Pocket and bolt-on styles add the most width and use exposed hardware for a rugged look; OE and street styles hug the arch for a factory appearance. Textured black finishes hide trail rash; paintable versions cost more to fit properly but disappear into the vehicle.
