GMC Sierra Tonneau Cover Guide: Folding, Roll-Up or Retractable

This guide is for GMC Sierra owners, most of them driving a Sierra 1500, who want to close in the bed. The real choice is how the cover opens: folding panels, a roll-up or a retractable. Before that, confirm four details on your Sierra, because they rule covers in or out.

Four Sierra details to confirm

  • Sierra 1500, 2500 or 3500. Covers are titled by model. In this guide the 2500/3500 covers are titled 2015-2019 or 2020-2026; everything else is for the Sierra 1500.
  • Bed and tailgate options. Some titles exclude the CarbonPro bed, and one names trucks with or without the MultiPro tailgate. If your Sierra has either, read the fitment notes on the product page.
  • Bed length. Titles here name 5.8 ft, 5'10", 6'6" and 6'9" beds, and makers write lengths differently: Extang describes a 6 ft 7 in bed for a cover our records list for the 6'6" bed. Match yours with the vehicle selector.
  • Silverado twins. Many covers are titled for both the Chevy Silverado and the GMC Sierra. Treat a cover as a Sierra cover only when its title or fitment table names the Sierra.

Folding covers

Hard folding covers use rigid panels that fold forward in sections and can usually be driven with the panels stacked.

Hard folding, Sierra 1500

  • Extang Solid Fold ALX Hard Folding Tonneau Cover: titled for the 2014-2024 GMC Sierra 1500. It closes over the cargo area from the cab to the tailgate. The title gives no bed length, so confirm it on the product page.
  • UnderCover Flex FX11022: titled for the 2019+ GM 1500 with the 5.8 ft bed, Crew or Extended cab, excluding the Carbon Pro bed, with or without the MultiPro tailgate; its fitment table lists the GMC Sierra 1500. FRP composite panels fold on built-in prop rods that hold the cover open for driving, and rubber seals and drain tubes channel water out of the bed, worth having when snow melts in the box.
  • UnderCover Flex FX11019, 6'6" bed: titled for the 2014-2019 GMC Sierra 1500 (the title also names Silverado models). Same Flex design: FRP composite panels, prop rods, rubber seals and drain tubes. See all UnderCover tonneau covers.

Soft folding, Sierra 1500

Hard roll-up, 2015-2019 Sierra 3500

  • BAK Industries Revolver X4s Tonneau Cover: titled for the 2015-2019 GMC Sierra 3500. BAK describes a hard roll-up: interlocking aluminum slats that support up to 400 lbs evenly distributed, rotational locking rails with automatic slam latches to secure the closed cover, and a clamp-on install without drilling. Check the bed length on the product page.

Retractable covers

Retractable covers roll into a canister at the bulkhead, so the bed can be left fully open without removing the cover.

FAQ

Does a Silverado tonneau cover fit a GMC Sierra?

Only when its title or its fitment table names the Sierra. Several covers here are titled for both trucks, such as the Tonno Fold and the RetraxONE XR. A cover titled for the Silverado alone is not a Sierra cover until its product page lists the Sierra.

My Sierra 1500 has the CarbonPro bed. What should I check?

Skip any cover whose title says Excl Carbon Pro or without CarbonPro, such as the UnderCover FX11022. For the rest, read the fitment notes on the product page, because a title can leave the bed option out.

Can I put weight on a closed tonneau cover?

Of the covers in this guide, only the BAK Revolver X4s description gives a figure: its slats support up to 400 lbs evenly distributed. The other makers here do not state a load, so do not assume one.

Which covers here suit a 2014-2018 Sierra 1500?

The Extang Solid Fold ALX is titled for the 2014-2024 GMC Sierra 1500, and the UnderCover FX11019 for the 6'6" bed of the 2014-2019 GMC Sierra 1500. The 2014-2018 Sierra 1500 page lists the rest.
