GMC Sierra Steps by Cab: Running Boards, Nerf and Drop Steps
Share
Count your Sierra's doors before you look at a single step. Every step in this guide is cut for one cab, Crew Cab or Double Cab, and most are titled for GMC Sierra 1500 trucks from 2019 together with heavy-duty trucks from 2020. Get the cab and the body right, then choose between a drop step, a nerf step and a full-length running board.
Which Sierra cab do you have?
Raptor Series spells it out in its fitment notes:
- Crew Cab: four full-size doors.
- Double Cab, which some titles call Extended Cab: two full-size front doors and two smaller rear doors.
Side steps are cut to the cab length they are listed for, so a Crew Cab step and a Double Cab step are different products even for the same year.
Check the body on a 2019 Sierra 1500
The 2019 model year is the one to double-check. Raptor's Double Cab steps are titled 2019+ but its note says they do not fit the old body style 2019 1500 LD or Limited models. If your 2019 Sierra 1500 is a Limited, check the fitment table on each product page before ordering.
Three kinds of step
- Drop steps: Raptor's RT Gen 2 steps use an angled drop step design with a slotted step area for traction.
- Nerf steps: nerf bars are tubular steps mounted to the rocker panel, typically with a step pad at each door.
- Running boards: a full-length step below the door opening, cut to the cab length listed.
For a side-by-side look at these types, including powered steps, see our guide Running boards vs nerf bars vs power steps.
Crew Cab Sierra
- Rolling Big Power Nerf Step, 19-23 Silverado/Sierra 1500 Crew, 20-23 GM HD: black, cab length nerf steps titled for the 2019-2023 Sierra 1500 Crew and 2020-2023 GM HD trucks.
- Raptor RT Gen 2 Steps, 2019+ Silv/Sierra 1500 / 2020+ Silv/Sierra 2500/3500 Crew Cab: black, cab length. Raptor says the Gen 2 steps are 30% longer and wider than its original RT Drop Steps, made of 14-gauge steel with a 3-stage black powder coating, and the kit includes driver and passenger boards, brackets and hardware. Raptor lists a no-drill install, a rocker panel mount and a step rated for 500 lbs.
Double Cab and Extended Cab Sierra
- Rolling Big Power Nerf Step, 19-23 Silverado/Sierra 1500 Extended Cab / 20-23 GM HD: the same black, cab length nerf step for the two-plus-two-door cab.
- Raptor RT Gen 2 Steps, 2019+ Silv/Sierra 1500 / 2020+ GM 2500/3500 Double Cab: the Double Cab version of the RT Gen 2 step, with mounting hardware and step pads included and no drilling, per Raptor. Remember the note above on 2019 Limited trucks.
Full-length running boards
- Gen-Y 84" Running Boards, 19-26 Silverado/Sierra 1500 Crew Cab / 20-26 Silverado/Sierra HD Crew Cab: an 84" running board set titled for Crew Cab trucks only.

FAQ
Is a Double Cab the same as an Extended Cab?
In these titles, yes in practice: Raptor describes the Double/Extended Cab as two full-size front doors and two smaller rear doors, and Rolling Big Power titles its version Extended Cab. Check the fitment table for your year.
Do Sierra 1500 steps fit a Sierra 2500 HD?
Some are titled for both. The Rolling Big Power steps name 20-23 GM HD trucks, the Raptor steps 2020+ 2500/3500, and the Gen-Y boards 20-26 Silverado/Sierra HD Crew Cab. Confirm on the product page.
Will these steps fit my 2019 Sierra 1500 Limited?
Raptor says its Double Cab steps do not fit the old body style 2019 1500 LD or Limited models. For a Limited, check each product's fitment table before ordering.
Do I need to drill?
Raptor lists a no-drill install for its RT Gen 2 steps. For other steps, check the product page.
