An intake works by giving the engine cooler, less restricted air — and the cooler half is what people forget. Pulling air from inside the engine bay after a heat soak can be worse than the factory airbox, which is usually fed from outside the bay for exactly that reason. A well-designed intake either keeps the filter in a shielded box or moves it into the fender.

Filter media is a real choice. Oiled cotton flows most and needs periodic cleaning and re-oiling; a dry synthetic flows nearly as well with no oil to migrate onto a mass airflow sensor, which is the classic cause of a check-engine light after an intake install.
