Ram 1500 Tonneau Covers: How to Choose the Right One

This guide is for Ram 1500 owners choosing a tonneau cover. Three things decide it: which Ram 1500 body you have (the 2019-and-newer truck, or the 2009-2018 truck and the Ram 1500 Classic), your bed length and whether the bed has RamBox, and how you want the cover to open. What to check first on your Ram 1500

• Which body. Some titles, such as Tonno Pro's, read "Dodge Ram 09-18 1500/ 19-24 1500 Classic", pairing the 2009-2018 Ram 1500 with the 2019-2024 Ram 1500 Classic. Covers for the 2019-and-newer Ram 1500 are titled separately ("2019+ RAM 1500"). On a 2019 or later truck, confirm whether yours is a Ram 1500 or a Ram 1500 Classic.
• Bed length. A cover is made for one bed. Titles for this truck name a 5'7" box (one title writes it as 5.5Ft) and a 6'4" box. Where a title below gives no bed length, the fitment table on the product page lists it.
• RamBox. RamBox is the storage built into the bed sides on trucks that have it. Most covers here are titled without RamBox.
• Tailgate. At least one 2019-and-newer title excludes trucks with the multi-function tailgate. Check the title and fitment notes against your truck.

How the cover types differ

A tonneau cover closes over the open cargo box of a pickup to hide and shelter what is carried inside; depending on the design it rolls, folds, retracts or lifts open for access.

• Soft roll-up: a tensioned vinyl sheet on a rail system that rolls forward to open the bed.
• Soft folding: a soft cover that folds open; Tonno Pro's Tonno Fold below is one.
• Hard folding: hard panels that fold open for access to the bed and close to cover it.
• Retractable: the cover slides back to open the bed and pulls closed over the cargo area.

Covers for the 2019-and-newer Ram 1500

• BAK Industries Hard Folding Tonneau Cover, 2019+ RAM Truck 1500 (Without RamBox): this is BAK's BAKFlip FiberMax. Its aluminum hard-folding panels carry an FRP (fiberglass reinforced polymer) surface that BAK says resists dents, scuffs and dings, with patented slam latches.
• Extang Tonneau Cover, 2019+ RAM 1500 (Without RamBox) (88427): Extang names it the Solid Fold ALX. It closes over the cargo area from the cab to the tailgate.

Covers for the 2009-2018 Ram 1500 and the Ram 1500 Classic

• BAK Industries Hard Folding Tonneau Cover, 2010-2018 RAM Truck 1500 (Without RamBox): hard panels fold open for access to the bed and close to cover it. The title names the 2010-2018 truck only, not the Classic.
• Tonno Pro Tonno Fold Soft Folding Tonneau Cover, Dodge Ram 09-18 1500 / 19-24 1500 Classic, 5'7" Box, without RamBox: a soft folding cover whose title covers both bodies with the 5'7" box.
• UnderCover Tonneau Cover, 2019-2023 RAM Truck 1500 Classic (Will Not Fit RAM Box): this is UnderCover's Flex folding cover. FRP composite panels fold on built-in prop rods that hold the cover open for driving, and rubber seals and drain tubes channel water out of the bed.

Only if its title names the Classic. The Tonno Pro Tonno Fold title covers both; the BAK 1126207 title names only the 2010-2018 RAM Truck 1500. Use the vehicle selector to confirm.

Does RamBox change which tonneau cover I need?

Yes. Most covers here are titled without RamBox, and the UnderCover title says it will not fit RAM Box. With RamBox, choose a cover whose title or fitment notes name it.
