A mat and a moulded liner are different products for different budgets. A universal mat is cheap and fits anything, which means it fits nothing exactly and lets meltwater run past its edges into the carpet. A moulded floor liner is cut to one vehicle's floor pan with a raised lip that contains the salt and slush that rot a floor pan from above.

Whichever you choose, retention matters more than people expect. A mat that slides forward can trap an accelerator pedal, which is a genuine hazard and the reason vehicles have factory retention hooks. Never lay a new mat on top of an old one, and check the mat engages your vehicle's hooks rather than merely sitting near them.
