Snow melts into carpet, salt crystallizes into the fibres, and by spring the cab smells like a wet basement and the floor is stained white. Floor liners exist to stop exactly this — but "floor mat" and "floor liner" are not the same thing.
Universal mats vs. custom-fit liners
A universal mat is a flat rubber sheet cut to a rough shape. It covers the middle of the footwell and stops there. Slush runs off the edges and under the mat — onto the carpet you were trying to protect.
A custom-fit liner is molded in three dimensions for one specific cab.
