Airing down for sand, snow or rock and airing back up at the road is the routine that makes a compressor essential rather than convenient — and it is the trip home, not the trail, that needs the air. A portable unit lives in a box and serves one vehicle; an on-board compressor is plumbed permanently, runs air lockers and tools, and is ready without unpacking.

Duty cycle matters more than peak flow. A compressor rated for short bursts will overheat and shut down partway through a set of 35-inch tires, which is exactly when you need it. Check the rated duty cycle at your ambient temperature, and size the tank if you intend to run air tools rather than only inflate.
