Flat-Towing a Ram 1500: Baseplates and Towing Accessories

This guide is for Ram 1500 owners who want to tow the truck behind a motorhome with all four wheels on the road, and for owners who want to dress up the front tow hooks. The towing accessories titled for the Ram 1500 here are Blue Ox tow bar baseplates and Recon tow hook covers. The main decision is which baseplate matches your truck's years and trim.

What to check first on your Ram 1500

  • Model year. The Blue Ox titles split the truck into 2009-2018, 2019-2024 and 2025-2026. The Recon tow hook covers are titled 2021-2024.
  • Trim and front end. Every baseplate title carries a condition. The 2009-2018 plate is titled for the 1500 Sport with the plastic bumper, the 2019-2024 plate excludes the TRX, and the 2025-2026 plate reads "including Rebel/RHO, including adaptive cruise control shutters". Read the words in brackets against your own truck before you order.
  • Ram 1500 or Ram 1500 Classic. A 2019-2024 truck can be either one, and they take different parts. Use the vehicle selector and check the fitment table on the product page.
  • Whether your truck may be flat towed. Check your owner's manual for whether and how your Ram can be towed four wheels down, and check your province's rules for towing a vehicle behind a motorhome. Nothing in this guide replaces either.

What these parts do

A tow bar baseplate is the bracket that mounts to the front of the vehicle being towed; the tow bar from the motorhome connects to it. It is one piece of a flat-tow setup, not the whole setup, so read the product page for what comes with the baseplate and what you need alongside it.

Tow hook covers are covers for the truck's tow hooks. Recon titles each set by colour, so colour is the choice to make.

Blue Ox baseplates by generation

2019-2024 Ram 1500

The Blue Ox Tow Bar Baseplate, 19-24 Ram 1500 (Excluding TRX) is titled for the 2019-2024 Ram 1500. The TRX is excluded by name, so a TRX owner should not order this plate.

2025-2026 Ram 1500

The Blue Ox Tow Bar Baseplate, 25-26 Ram 1500 (Including Rebel/RHO) is titled for the 2025-2026 Ram 1500. Its title names the Rebel and RHO as included, and adds "including adaptive cruise control shutters". If you are unsure whether your truck has those shutters, ask your dealer before ordering.

2009-2018 Ram 1500

The Blue Ox Baseplate, Dodge Ram 09-18 1500 Sport with Plastic Bumper is part BX2409, which Blue Ox lists for the 2009-2018 Dodge Ram 1500 Sport with the plastic bumper. That is a narrow listing: if your 2009-2018 truck is another trim, or the Sport with a different bumper, this title does not cover it.

The rest of the line is on the Blue Ox brand page.

Recon tow hook covers, 2021-2024 Ram 1500

Recon titles the same tow hook covers for the 2021-2024 Ram 1500 in five colours. The years are identical across the set, so pick the colour that suits your paint and trim:

Black blends in with a dark bumper; red, blue and yellow stand out against it. The Recon brand page has the rest of the line.

If your Ram is the one doing the towing, hitches, brake controllers and wiring are a separate subject, covered in Towing Basics: Hitches, Brake Controllers and Wiring.

FAQ

Which Blue Ox baseplate fits my Ram 1500?

Match by year first, then by the words in brackets: 2009-2018 is titled for the 1500 Sport with the plastic bumper, 2019-2024 excludes the TRX, and 2025-2026 includes the Rebel and RHO. Then confirm in the fitment table on the product page.

Is there a baseplate here for the Ram 1500 TRX?

No. The 2019-2024 Blue Ox title excludes the TRX by name, and none of the baseplates in this guide is titled for it.

Can I flat tow my Ram 1500 behind a motorhome?

Check your owner's manual for whether and how your truck can be towed four wheels down, and check your province's rules for towed vehicles. The baseplate is only the mount on the truck; the product page lists what it includes.

Do the Recon tow hook covers fit a 2025 Ram 1500?

They are titled for the 2021-2024 Ram 1500. For any other year, check the fitment table on the product page before ordering.
