Jeep Wrangler JL vs JK Parts: What Is Different and What Fits
Share
The Jeep Wrangler JK (2007 to 2018) and the Wrangler JL (2018 onward) look alike, so it is easy to assume parts swap between them. Most do not. The JL brought a new body, a new frame and a reworked suspension, and a part built for one generation usually will not bolt onto the other. Here is what changed, what can cross over, and how to tell which one you have.
The 2018 overlap year
For the 2018 model year Jeep built both generations. The JK stayed in production alongside the new JL, so a "2018 Wrangler" can be either one. That is why some listings spell it out, like the Skyjacker Suspension Shocks — 53.5" — 2007-2018 Jeep Wrangler; 2018 Jeep Wrangler JK (SKYA2087): the title names the JK so a 2018 JL owner knows it is not for them. When a part says 2018, read which generation it names.
What changed between the JK and the JL
Body, tops and doors
The JL body is new. Jeep moved to aluminum for the doors, hood, fenders and windshield frame, changed the door hinges, and reshaped the tub, the fuel door and the rocker area. Hard tops, soft tops, doors, fender flares, grilles and hoods are generation-specific.
Some owners in Canada run a hard top through the winter and a soft top in summer. Both tops have to match the generation, because the windshield header, seals and mounting points differ, and a top that does not seal lets in slush and cold air. Browse Jeep Tops, Doors & Body and check the generation on each listing.
The JL shares its front end and much of its cabin with the Gladiator JT pickup, so some JL body parts are also listed for the Gladiator. The Putco 2018+ Wrangler JL Gladiator JT 2Dr/4Dr Sky View Hard Top Roof Lid Dark Gray is one example; its title names both. For any other part, trust only the vehicles a listing names.
Frame and wheelbase
The JL rides on a new frame with a slightly longer wheelbase than the JK, in both two-door and four-door (Unlimited) form. Bumper mounts, body mounts, skid plate points and hitch mounts all moved. That is why bumpers, rock sliders, steps and hitches rarely swap between generations.
Suspension and steering
Both generations use solid axles front and rear with coil springs and control arms, so the parts look similar on the shelf. The mounting points, arm lengths, spring rates and stock ride heights are different, and the JL moved to electro-hydraulic power steering. Lift kits, springs, shocks, control arms and track bars are built for one generation; the JKS Manufacturing 2.5" Lift Kit | J-Venture | Wrangler JL 4-Door — Front (JSPEC118KFA) names both the JL and the door count in its title. A JK shock and a JL shock for the same lift height usually have different extended and compressed lengths.
Interior and electrical
The JL dash, console and seats are new, and its wiring and connectors changed. Floor liners, seat covers, dash mounts and plug-in harnesses are specific to one generation. Lighting that looks similar from the outside often needs a different mount or harness.
Engines
The JK used a 3.8L V6 through 2011 and the 3.6L Pentastar V6 from 2012. The JL offers the 3.6L again, plus a 2.0L turbo four, a 3.0L diesel in some years, the 4xe plug-in hybrid and the 392 V8. Even with the 3.6L in both, the engine bay and intake path are different, so intakes, exhaust and engine-bay accessories are generation-specific, and some JL parts exclude certain versions. A block heater is matched to the engine, so choose it by engine and year, not by the Wrangler name alone.
What often crosses over, and what does not
These are general patterns. The product page is the final word.
- Usually does not cross over: tops, doors, hoods, grilles, fender flares, bumpers, steps and running boards, lift kits, springs, shocks, control arms, floor liners, seat covers and vehicle-specific wiring.
- Sometimes crosses over: wheels. Both generations use a 5x5 bolt pattern (5x127 mm), but the JK uses 1/2-20 lug studs and the JL uses metric M14x1.5, so lug nuts do not swap. Offset, backspacing and brake clearance still decide the fit.
- Often not tied to a generation: recovery straps, shackles, tire repair kits and other gear that does not bolt to the vehicle. Read the listing anyway.
Running boards show the pattern well. Go Rhino makes boards for both generations, and they are separate parts: the Go Rhino Running Boards — 2007-2018 Jeep Wrangler JK (63450568PC) for the JK and the Go Rhino Running Boards — 2018+ Jeep Wrangler JL (20450674PC) for the JL. Same brand, same idea, different mounts. Door count matters too; a board sized for a four-door will not suit a two-door.
How to tell which Wrangler you have
- Year: 2007 to 2017 is a JK. 2019 and newer is a JL. A 2018 could be either.
- Paperwork: the window sticker, bill of sale or registration may name the model as Wrangler JK or JK Unlimited. A VIN decoder will also confirm the generation.
- Front turn signals: on a JK they sit in the grille below the headlights. On a JL they are in the front edge of the fender flares.
- Grille and headlights: on a JL the headlights cut into the outer grille slots. On a JK the round headlights sit fully inside the grille.
Ordering the right part
Use the vehicle selector and pick your year and model. Each product page lists the years, makes and models it fits; read that list and the title, not the photo. If a listing names a door count, trim or engine, or excludes one, that detail matters. When a page does not name your Wrangler, treat the part as not fitting until you confirm it.
FAQ
Do JK parts fit a JL Wrangler?
Mostly no. The JL has a new body, frame and suspension, so tops, doors, bumpers, steps, lift kits and interior parts are built for one generation. A part fits a JL only when its product page names the JL.
Is a 2018 Wrangler a JK or a JL?
It can be either. Jeep built both generations for the 2018 model year. Check your paperwork for the JK name, or look at the front turn signals: in the grille means JK, in the fender flares means JL.
Will my JK wheels fit a JL?
Often, because both use a 5x5 (5x127 mm) bolt pattern. The lug thread is different, so the lug nuts do not carry over, and offset, backspacing and brake clearance still need checking on the product page.
Do JL parts fit a Jeep Gladiator?
Some front-end and cabin parts are shared with the Gladiator JT, but only rely on it when the listing names the Gladiator. Bed, frame and rear suspension parts are different.
