A cap converts an open bed into lockable, dry storage, which changes what a pickup is for more than any other single accessory. The trade is overhead access and total height: loading happens through the tailgate and rear door rather than over the rails, and a capped truck may no longer clear a garage or parking structure it used to.

Fit is by bed length and generation rather than by model year alone. Check the clamp arrangement, whether the cap suits a bed with a thick spray-in liner lip, and how the rear door and side windows seal — the seal is what separates a dry cap from one that lets road spray in at highway speed.
