This is the category that keeps existing steps usable. Step pads wear out long before the bar does, and a worn pad on an icy morning is the actual failure mode — a polished tube with no grip is more dangerous than no step at all. Replacing pads and caps is far cheaper than replacing the board.
Brackets are the other half. A step is only as solid as its mount, and mounting brackets are vehicle-specific even when the bar is universal. If you have lifted the vehicle, check whether a longer bracket is available before assuming the original will still put the step where your foot lands.
