Skid plates protect the components that end a trip rather than shorten one. A punctured oil pan, a cracked transfer case or a holed fuel tank strands the vehicle where it sits, which is why underbody protection is the first modification on a vehicle that travels beyond cell coverage.

Material is a genuine trade. Steel takes the hardest hits and can be hammered back into shape, at significant weight. Aluminum saves that weight and slides well but deforms rather than rebounding. Whichever you choose, check the plates allow service access — a skid plate that has to come off entirely for an oil change stops being fitted after the second time.
