Lowering is done properly or done cheaply, and the difference is whether suspension travel survives. A drop spindle relocates the hub within the knuckle: the vehicle sits lower while keeping its spring rate, its travel and its geometry. Cutting or heating springs achieves the same height, destroys all three, and cannot be reversed.

At the rear, a flip kit moves the axle above the leaf spring for a substantial drop, while shackles and hangers make smaller adjustments. Any real drop needs shorter bump stops and shocks valved for the reduced travel — without them the suspension runs out of room and rides on the stops over every expansion joint.
