Ford Ranger Running Boards and Side Steps: How to Choose
Share
This guide is for Ford Ranger owners choosing a step into the cab: a full-length running board, a drop step or a nerf bar. The choice comes down to your Ranger's years and cab first, then the kind of step surface you want.
What to check first on your Ranger
- Years. Our vehicle pages split the current Ranger into 2019-2023 and 2024-2026. Several titles below read 2019+, and one Raptor running board is titled 2019-2023 only. Match the years in the title to your truck.
- Cab. Steps are cut to the cab length they are listed for, so the cab matters more than anything else. Raptor's fitment notes are explicit: its Crew Cab RT Steps (RTS10FD) fit only the SuperCrew Cab (four full-size doors), and its 5" running boards below fit only the SuperCab (two full-size front doors and two smaller rear doors). Count your doors before you order.
- Titles without a vehicle. Two of the steps below have titles that name no vehicle. Our fitment table on each product page lists the Ranger years they are matched to; read it before you buy.
Running boards, drop steps or nerf bars
The makers describe three shapes. Running boards give a full-length step below the door opening. Raptor's RT steps use an angled drop step mounted to the rocker panel. Nerf bars, in N-Fab's words, are tubular steps mounted to the rocker panel, typically with a step pad at each door; side step bars such as Carr's also mount to the rocker panel. A step sits low on the truck in slush and road salt all winter, so read how each maker describes its finish. For a broader comparison, see Running boards vs nerf bars vs power steps.
Side steps and drop steps
- Carr LD Step, XM3 Polished, Pair (114502): a polished two-piece side step bar set. Carr says the LD step gives easier access to the vehicle thanks to a wider and deeper stepping surface that extends further than its other steps. The title names no vehicle, so check the fitment table for your year and cab.
- Raptor Magnum RT Gen 2 Drop Steps, Black Textured Alloy Steel (GTS10FD): Raptor calls these the 2.0 version of its original RT Drop Steps, 30% longer and wider, with a slotted step area for traction in any weather. The kit includes driver and passenger boards, brackets and hardware. The title names no vehicle or cab; confirm both on the product page.
- Raptor 2019+ Ranger Crew Cab Black Cab Length RT Steps: the original RT step, with a diamond tread step plate, 10-gauge steel and a 3-stage black powder coat. Raptor lists a quick no-drill install and a step rated for 500 lbs, and notes it fits only the SuperCrew Cab. Driver and passenger boards, brackets and hardware are included.
Running boards and nerf bars
- Raptor Running Boards, 2019-2023 Ford Ranger (RAP2203-0251BT): black aluminum 5" OEM-style full-tread running boards, which Raptor says give a factory-installed look. Raptor's note limits them to the SuperCab (Extended Cab). The kit includes driver and passenger boards, brackets and hardware.
- N-Fab Nerf Bars, 2019+ Ford Ranger (319418112): a textured black set from N-Fab's Nerf Step series. The title names no cab, so check the fitment table for the cab and bed it is listed for.

FAQ
Will a step for a 2019-2023 Ranger fit a 2024 Ranger?
Only if the title covers it. Our vehicle pages treat the 2024-2026 Ranger separately. The Raptor running boards (RAP2203-0251BT) are titled 2019-2023 only, while the Raptor RT Steps and the N-Fab nerf bars are titled 2019+. Confirm with the vehicle selector.
Does it matter if my Ranger is a SuperCab or a SuperCrew?
Yes. Steps are cut to the cab length they are listed for. Raptor states its Crew Cab RT Steps (RTS10FD) fit only the SuperCrew Cab with four full-size doors, and its RAP2203-0251BT running boards only the SuperCab.
Running board, drop step or nerf bar?
A running board gives a full-length step below the door opening. Raptor's RT steps use an angled drop step. A nerf bar is a tubular step, typically with a step pad at each door. Pick the surface you find easiest to use, then match years and cab.
Do these steps need drilling?
Raptor lists a quick no-drill install for the RT Steps. For the other steps in this guide, check the product page.
