Size the winch to the vehicle, not to the winch you like. The usual rule is a rated line pull of at least one and a half times the vehicle's gross weight, because a stuck vehicle is heavier than a rolling one — mud, a slope and a buried tire all add to what the line actually has to move.

Rope choice is a safety decision more than a performance one. Synthetic rope is lighter, floats, and drops to the ground if it parts rather than whipping; steel cable is cheaper and shrugs off abrasion on rock, but stores far more energy when it fails. Whichever you run, a rated shackle and a damper over the line are the difference between a recovery and an incident.
