A trailer parked and unattended is the easiest thing on a property to take, because it needs no keys — just a vehicle with a ball. A coupler lock covers the coupler so nothing can latch onto it; a hitch pin lock stops the ball mount being pulled from the receiver; a wheel lock stops the trailer being rolled away.

Use more than one and buy for the weather. A lock that seizes with ice in February is a lock you stop using, so choose weather-sealed or shrouded mechanisms and keep them lubricated. Match the lock to your coupler size — a lock that fits loosely can often be defeated without tools.
