Start with what your roof gives you. Flush rails, raised rails, fixed points, a rain gutter and a bare roof each need a different foot and a different fit kit, and the kit is vehicle-specific even when the bars are not. Buying bars without confirming the fit kit is the most common mistake in this category.

Then check two limits. The vehicle's roof load rating is set by the manufacturer and is usually far lower than the rack's own capacity — the lower number governs. And a dynamic rating applies while driving; a much higher static rating applies parked, which is why a rooftop tent can be within one and outside the other.
