Flaps protect the vehicle behind you and the one you are driving. On a salted road the spray thrown off a rear tire is what sandblasts your own rocker panels and lower doors, and rust perforation there is the usual reason an otherwise sound truck fails an inspection. On a gravel road the same spray is what chips the windshield of whatever is following.

Custom-fit flaps use factory mounting points and sit close to the tire without contacting it at full articulation; universal flaps cost less and need drilling, which puts a hole in a panel you are trying to protect from corrosion. If you have lifted the vehicle or fitted flares, check the flap is cut for the wider track.
