An intercooler cools the air after compression, and cooler air is denser air — the reason a boosted engine makes more power on a cold night. Core size is a trade: a larger core cools better and adds volume the turbo must fill, so an oversized intercooler on a small engine gives back in lag what it gains in temperature.

Bar-and-plate cores are robust and hold heat longer; tube-and-fin cores are lighter and shed heat faster, which suits repeated short pulls rather than sustained load. Whatever you fit, the charge pipes and clamps are part of the system — a boost leak at a coupler will cost more than the intercooler gains.
