Hood venting is functional on a hard-worked engine. Heat that leaves through the hood is heat not soaking into the intake, and on a lifted or heavily built vehicle louvres measurably lower under-hood temperature — which matters most to the intake air the engine is about to breathe.

Latches are the safety half. Aftermarket rubber catches and pin kits are common on Jeeps and older trucks where the factory latch has worn, and a hood that lifts at highway speed is one of the few failures that is immediately dangerous. Replace tired catches rather than adjusting them repeatedly.
