Gooseneck & 5th Wheel

These are bed-mounted systems rated well beyond a receiver hitch, which is why they carry stock trailers, RVs and equipment. The load goes through the bed floor into the frame rather than hanging off the rear bumper area, so the mounting kit — the rails and frame brackets — is doing as much work as the hitch head.

The two are not interchangeable in feel. A gooseneck uses a ball in the bed and takes up less space; a fifth wheel uses a plate and kingpin, is more forgiving over rough pavement, and is what most RVs are built around. Adapters exist between them and generally reduce the rating — check the adapter's own numbers rather than the hitch's.
