Couplers join tube that cannot be welded together, most often on a charge-air or intake path where two sections need to move slightly relative to each other. Silicone handles heat and pressure far better than rubber on a boosted engine, and reducer couplers step between two diameters without a machined adapter.

The clamp is what fails, not usually the coupler. A worm-drive clamp cuts into silicone under boost and can pull through; T-bolt and spring clamps spread the load and hold pressure. On anything carrying boost, use T-bolt clamps and check them after the first heat cycle — silicone takes a set and the joint loosens once.
