A spring sets ride height and carrying capacity; the shock only controls how it moves. If your truck sags at the rear under a load or sits nose-high empty, the spring is the part to change. Dual-rate springs stay soft over small inputs and stiffen as they compress, which is why they suit a vehicle that is empty most days and loaded some.

Spring rate is a choice about use, not about height. Two springs of the same lifted height can ride entirely differently, and the heavier rate is only the right answer if you actually carry the weight. Fitting a heavy-duty rate to an unladen truck gives you the harshness without the benefit.
