Auxiliary lamps earn their place by covering what the main beams cannot. Ditch lights mounted at the cowl throw wide into the verge where deer and washouts appear, without adding glare to the road ahead. Reverse lamps turn backing a trailer at night from guesswork into something you can see. Rock lights sit under the vehicle and light the ground you are about to place a tire on.

Beam pattern decides usefulness more than raw output. A spot pattern reaches; a flood fills; a combination does both at the cost of doing neither perfectly. Colour temperature matters too — a warmer amber cuts through falling snow and dust where a cold white simply lights it up and blinds you.
