Exhaust tips: bolt-on, weld-on, and getting the size right

An exhaust tip changes how the end of the pipe looks and, a little, how it sounds. It is not a muffler and it will not add power. That is worth saying first, because it is the cheapest visible change you can make to a truck and it gets bought for the wrong reasons.

Three numbers decide whether it fits

Inlet is the diameter of the pipe it slides onto — this is the one people get wrong. Measure the outside of your tailpipe, not the inside. Outlet is the visible diameter at the back, and it is purely cosmetic. Length decides how far it projects past the bumper. All three are on every product page, and the inlet is the only one that can make the part unusable.

Bolt-on or weld-on

A bolt-on or clamp-on tip slides over the existing pipe and tightens with a clamp or set screws — no cutting, and it comes off again. Median $105, and it is the cheaper group. A weld-on tip is permanent and needs a shop unless you weld. For most people the clamp-on is the right answer, and if you are leasing the vehicle it is the only sensible one.

What it will and will not change

It changes the look, and a larger outlet can deepen the note slightly. It does not change power, flow or emissions behaviour, and no tip makes a stock exhaust loud. If you want the sound to change, the muffler is the part that does it.
