Un refroidisseur intermédiaire refroidit l'air après compression, et un air plus froid est un air plus dense — la raison pour laquelle un moteur suralimenté produit plus par une nuit fraîche. La taille du faisceau est un compromis : un faisceau plus grand refroidit mieux et ajoute un volume que le turbo doit remplir, si bien qu'un refroidisseur surdimensionné sur un petit moteur redonne en temps de réponse ce qu'il gagne en température.

Les faisceaux à barres et plaques sont robustes et retiennent la chaleur plus longtemps; les faisceaux à tubes et ailettes sont plus légers et l'évacuent plus vite, ce qui convient aux accélérations répétées plutôt qu'à la charge soutenue. Quoi que vous posiez, les tubulures et les colliers font partie du système — une fuite de pression à un manchon coûtera plus que le refroidisseur ne rapporte.
